Chaotic life in a single drop of water. This time lapse video shows giant spiral bacteria wiggling in the background. The large oval is a ciliate, a single cell eukaryote. The smaller fast bright dots are other ciliates. I used Phase contrast microscopy here to better image the bacteria, which appear darker with this method. They are nearly 200 microns in length. Sample is from a freshwater Florida spring off a microbial mat. 400x magnification and video speed 6x time. #bacteria #bacterias #ciliate #protist #microbe #microbes #microbiology #chaotic #life #biodiversity #timelapse #timelapsevideo #ecology #wildlife #cell #phd #waterdrop #ecosystem #pondlife #species #nature #florida #freshwater #science #creature #water

Microbes are literally everywhere, and some are in exotic locations. These Ciliates however were collected from rain water in a container left out in my garden. The sample was filling with fallen leaf litter and algae. These single cell eukaryotes are in the genus Stylonychia, and they have long specialized cilia that look awesome. These cells are full of ingested orange spheres, and my hypothesis is they are pollen spores.. but I will entertain other theories below 🍊 😎. 200x DIC #ciliate #protist #protozoa #orange #pollen #spore #mold #cell #garden #cilia #pondlife #microbe #microbiology #science #research #algae #hypothesis #dispersal #rainwater #eukaryote #cellbiology #creature #wildlife #ecology #food #ootd #sphere #bio

Real time video of microbial life in a drop of water magnified 100x. A clear naked amoeba wiggles around, consuming yellow diatoms. A ciliates moves about at top. A long green strand of Cyanobacteria moves out of frame as a small multicellular clear gastrotrich swims in. Collected from a freshwater Florida spring. The locomotion types may all be different, but all these cells are busy. Check out my last post for a time lapse video of a similar scene from the same drop. #amoeba #cyanobacteria #ciliate #diatom #algae #bacteria #life #gastrotrich #movement #microbe #microbes #pondlife #biology #ecology #biodiversity #ecosystem #cell #cellbiology #locomotion #species #wildlife #animal #nature #pondlife #science
